Microsoft joined with Yahoo to fight Google
After nearly ten years of exploration, the Justice Department and finally the European Commission approved the merger of Microsoft and Yahoo. Through the merger agreement, the Yahoo search site will be redirected to Microsoft's search site that Bing.com. In exchange, Yahoo will manage the ad sales and revenue gain for the results of the user traffic.
Merger agreement was first announced in July 2009 and then, but both companies have to wait to get official permission from the regulator, before going further.
The European Commission said Microsoft and Yahoo customers currently less than 10 percent of the search engine market in Europe, while customers Google has reached 90 percent. The merger is expected to increase competition to rival the dominance of Google.
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's Chief Executive said, "I believe that together, Microsoft and Yahoo will promote more choice, better value and greater innovation for our customers and also for advertisers and publishers." While Carol Bartz, Yahoo Chief Executive described the agreement as "a breakthrough search engine alliance," according to the Telegraph proclaimed Thursday.
